Arts and Medicine

Insight Institute integrates arts and humanities in the study and practice of medicine. Our interest in this area stems from several important trends, including the growing premium on advanced medical technology and the soaring costs of the health care system without a clear correlation to the quality of patient services. As it has been recognized, both of these developments may have come at the expense of compassion and the human dimension in medical care.

The programs we offer aim to enhance medical training and practice by building on existing art-based initiatives at major American medical schools. As these initiatives have demonstrated, the use of art - literature, visual arts, music - in the training and continuous education of medical professionals improves capabilities directly relevant to actual practice: attentiveness to visual clues/ symptoms and their meanings, ability to accept and reconcile a variety of different perspectives, as well as responsiveness to the emotional and psychological needs of patients.

Ultimately, a more compassionate and empathetic delivery of health care reduces costs and increases the overall quality of the healthcare system. On a more general level, we are guided by management practices that emphasize cooperation, collaboration, and flexibility in addressing daily challenges in the work environment.

Arts and the Military

Insight Institute uses visual arts to develop essential leadership skills among current and future leaders within the armed forces.  In this context, we have developed course offerings based on Desired Leader Attributes (DLA's), which promote active learning, as well as creative and independent thinking.

Students develop and hone their skills of observation, analysis, and communication to gain a finer grasp of ways in which DLA’s have been maintained across different times and places, as well as modified in specific contexts. Through the ambiguities inherent in art, this course exposes participants to different perspectives in the decision making process while fostering a deeper appreciation of the operational environment in different cultures of the world.

Arts and the Law Enforcement

Insight Institute uses visual arts to promote best policing practices for effective crime reduction while building public trust.

Our focus is on essential policing skills: observation, analysis, communication, and community relations. Observation and analysis play a critical role in numerous aspects of law enforcement: identification of suspects, securing evidence, preparation of reports for superiors and recovery of stolen property. Better listening and communication skills contribute to a culture of transparency and accountability. Better police work prevents crimes, saves lives and builds trust and confidence in the public.

Insight Institute helps officers recognize and neutralize biases that often interfere in the decision-making processes. Our programs encourage law enforcement agencies to strive to create a workforce that encompasses a broad range of diversity including race, gender, language, life experience, and cultural background, in order to improve understanding and effectiveness in dealing with all communities.

Insight Institute’s collaborative workshops develop trust, candor and openness within a team over time. This builds momentum and productivity in a non-competitive, cooperative, safe environment that is full of possibilities. Robust teamwork encourages individual satisfaction in reaching full potential.
