Why is E.I. important to employers?
What is Emotional Intelligence?

Since Daniel Goleman's 1995 publication of a book by the same title (Emotional Intelligence), the phrase has become quite the buzz word in executive circles, but what does it really mean? At the Insight Insitute we like to use this definition:

A person's ability to perceive, identify and manage emotion.

Cognitive ability, or IQ, can contribute greatly to an individual's success; however, over the past 10 years there is mounting research evidencing the importance Emotional Intelligence in successful people's lives. Some researchers estimate that as much as 80% of adult success comes from Emotional Intelligence.

Why is emotional intelligence of so much interest
to employers?

Recognizing the importance of Emotional Intelligence in the workplace, and then making efforts to help employees develop greater Emotional Intelligence, is a critical step towards reducing risks and enhancing overall organizational performance. By increasing the emotional competency of employees, an organization stands to:

Reduce employee conflicts

Increase individual responsibility and ownership in job performance

Improve team effectiveness

Enhance leadership potentials

The BarOn EQi (Emotional Quotient Inventory)

Insight Institute uses the BarOn EQi as our primary instrument for measuring Emotional Intelligence. We believe it is the best tested and most successful measure of Emotional Intelligence available.

The BarOn EQi measures one's ability to deal with daily environmental demands and pressures, and helps predict one's success in both professional and personal pursuits.

Appropriate uses of the BarOn EQi include:

  • As an identifier of potential areas of improvement for individuals and/or groups
  • As a guide for creating an appropriate action plan

Many skills associated with Emotional Intelligence are acquired and can be improved through training. The BarOn EQi can be administered online to anyone16 years of age or older and takes about 30 minutes to complete. Also available for teams is a group test which provides an 18-page anonymous summary of Emotional Intelligence for a given group.
